Agriculture in the Classroom – Saskatchewan

SaskBarley is a member of Agriculture in the Classroom-SK, a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to agricultural education. Every year, it inspires more than 70,000 youth in Saskatchewan to gain a deeper understanding of and develop a stronger connection to the food production system, while also fostering their aspirations to potentially join the industry in the future.

2024-25 Activities

AITC-SK Expands Agricultural Education Across Saskatchewan: 463K Learning Experiences Delivered

Thanks to the longstanding support from SaskBarley, AITC-SK has expanded its reach across Saskatchewan. Funding provided by this membership has been applied to program and resource updates, promotion, delivery, and distribution.

Expanding Agricultural Education Across Saskatchewan

Thanks to SaskBarley’s continued support, AITC-SK significantly expanded its reach in 2024, engaging over 88,700 students and 16,600 youth across 644 schools, 72 home schools, and 266 communities. This partnership enabled the delivery of more than 463,000 agriculture learning experiences, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. These experiences have helped foster agricultural literacy and awareness among young learners throughout the province.

Diverse, Accessible Programming

SaskBarley’s funding supported over 30 free educational programs, including flagship initiatives like Food Farms, Ag Experience, and the Agribition Agri-Ed Showcase. In May and June alone, AITC-SK delivered over 190 classroom presentations on topics such as soil science, Saskatchewan-grown ingredients, land stewardship, and agricultural career pathways—ensuring students gain a well-rounded understanding of agriculture’s role in their lives.

Barley-Focused Resources and Engagement

Barley was prominently featured in several educational resources and activities. The ExploreSaskAg.ca website saw over 36,000 users and 136,777 pageviews, with dedicated content on barley. The Foundations of Saskatchewan Agriculture – Barley e-learning module reached 828 students, while the Saskatchewan Seed Kit, which includes barley as a “mystery seed,” was distributed to 83 classrooms, engaging over 2,500 students in hands-on learning.

Career Exploration and Community Outreach

Through the thinkAG Career Education Initiatives, students explored diverse agricultural careers via expos, fairs, classroom tools, and mobile apps. New expos were launched in Wakaw, Prince Albert, and Yorkton. Additionally, the Grains Display, featuring barley, debuted at the Crop Production Show and was showcased at events like AgEXperience, reaching over 650 urban Grade 4 students. The Teacher Agriculture Expedition also highlighted barley during a tour of East-Central Saskatchewan, engaging 22 educators in immersive learning.
