Canadian Barley Research Coalition invests $1.15 million in barley breeding to drive innovation and sustainability
Saskatoon, SK – November 17, 2025 – The Canadian Barley Research Coalition (CBRC) is pleased to announce an investment of $1,148,900 over three years in a Core Barley Breeding Agreement with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). This producer-funded investment will support the development of new barley varieties with higher yields, stronger disease resistance, and improved agronomics to ensure the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of Canadian barley.
“Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s barley breeding efforts help to ensure farmers stay productive, and crops remain resilient to environmental challenges,” said the Honourable Heath MacDonald, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “This investment demonstrates how AAFC is driving innovation through collaboration with farmers.”
The Core Barley Breeding Agreement ensures that farmers remain at the forefront of driving research priorities. By working with AAFC’s world-class researchers, CBRC is helping deliver practical solutions and improved genetics that respond to evolving market and environmental demands.
