SaskBarley commits $124,609 to collaborative barley research

Uncategorized ADF, Press Release, Research

January 15, 2025 (Saskatoon, SK) – The Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission (SaskBarley) announced today that it has committed $124,609 to fund barley research over the next four years.

“SaskBarley invests in research projects that benefit Saskatchewan farmers,” says SaskBarley Research Committee Co-Chair, Cody Glenn. “These initiatives address concerns identified across the barley industry that will enhance production and marketing for Saskatchewan barley.”

The projects supported were reviewed and funded in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) program and other like-minded organizations supporting agriculture research in Saskatchewan.

This announcement comes as a welcome addition to 61 other current SaskBarley-funded research projects at the end of last year. This funding builds on the over $11 million SaskBarley has invested in research to date. The two projects funded under this round of ADF proposals will investigate root lodging and greenhouse gas emissions in barley.

SaskBarley’s allocation of producer dollars towards research represents a strategic investment in key areas that align with the organization’s strategic plan. SaskBarley will also partner, where possible, to leverage funding amounts for research in a way that will benefit the entire barley industry, says Executive Director Jill McDonald.

“SaskBarley engages in strategic partnerships to enhance our investments and increase the value for Saskatchewan barley farmers,” says McDonald. “We are pleased to be collaborating with other partners on these projects, including the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Alberta Grains, Manitoba Crop Alliance, and the Western Grains Research Foundation.”
