SaskBarley Invests in Targeted Research Through BMBRI Partnership

News BMBRI, Research

(May 4, 2026) Saskatoon, SK — SaskBarley is investing $64,643 in applied barley research over the next year through the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute (BMBRI), supporting projects focused on improving malt quality, agronomic performance, and crop resilience.

The funding will support four priority research projects addressing key challenges for producers and end-users, including: variable nitrogen strategies to manage protein in malt barley, pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) management, improving heat tolerance, and deoxynivalenol (DON) degradation.

In total, $103,285 is being invested in projects supported by SaskBarley, including partner contributions.

“These investments ensure Saskatchewan barley growers are directly supporting research that delivers practical solutions on farm while strengthening our position in global malt markets,” said Cody Glenn, Chair of SaskBarley.

SaskBarley’s investment is part of a broader, coordinated funding effort led by BMBRI, which approved up to $193,188 in research funding for 2026–27.

The funded research supports the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of Canada’s malting barley sector, ensuring producers and industry stakeholders have access to the tools and knowledge needed to meet evolving market demands.
