SaskBarley Awards Scholarships to Outstanding Barley Researchers
(Saskatoon, SK) The Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission (SaskBarley) is proud to announce the recipients of its 2024 Scholarship Program, recognizing three promising students whose research will contribute significantly to the advancement of barley production. This year’s awards support projects across the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels that address critical challenges facing the barley industry.
Sheila Andrade, a PhD student at the University of Saskatchewan, received a $6,000 scholarship. Her groundbreaking research uses synchrotron-based X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography to identify Fusarium-damaged kernels (FDKs) in barley—a critical step in combating Fusarium head blight (FHB), a major fungal disease affecting barley in Western Canada. This study could revolutionize FHB assessment, assisting breeders in selecting more resilient barley varieties.
Suman Bagale, an MSc student at the University of Alberta, was awarded a $4,000 scholarship for his work exploring the root system architecture (RSA) of barley. Suman’s research compares old and modern barley varieties, aiming to enhance lodging tolerance through improved root traits and nitrogen use efficiency. His work holds potential for increasing barley yields and resilience.
Jessa Fox, an undergraduate at the University of Saskatchewan, received a $2,000 scholarship for her thesis on bacterial leaf streak (BLS) in barley. By developing optimized inoculation methods for BLS, her research could improve the reliability of data on BLS infections, enabling future studies to identify barley varieties with greater disease resistance.
“We are thrilled to support these talented individuals and their impactful research. Their work not only advances barley science but also strengthens the future of barley as a competitive crop choice for Saskatchewan farmers,” said Jill McDonald, Executive Director of SaskBarley.
